I wrote about my new book, not yet published, last week. I shared Chapter 1 in that piece, and I also shared my goals of finding a literary agent so that I can get it published. I was and still am looking for any feedback that anyone wishes to share with me.
Today, I am sharing Chapter 2. Again, the book is not finalized, though the 35 chapters are all written, totaling 67K words.
Chapter 2 – A Talk with Elaine
When Lindsay moved to NYC after college, she lived with her friend Elaine Peters in a one-bedroom apartment on the Upper East Side. Elaine had gone to Northwestern too, and she took a job in NYC where she still works, at JP Morgan, with headquarters on Park Avenue and 48th Street. Elaine grew up in Boston, and she and Lindsay enjoyed living together and remained friends after Lindsay moved in 1988.
They saw each other often, but Lindsay and Elaine had neither gotten together or even talked since Lindsay met Ervin at Fairway. That night, after her first date with him, she called. Yeah, it was a little late, but Elaine tended to stay up until after midnight.
When Elaine answered the phone, Lindsay said hello. Elaine asked, “What has you so excited?” She could hear the excitement and thought it was a little odd calling her this late.
Lindsay told her about meeting Ervin on Saturday and then having an incredible first date. Elaine asked where he worked, and Lindsay told her at Merrill Lynch in equity research. While Lindsay was not a fan of Wall Street at all, Elaine was, and she was impressed.
“So, is he good looking? Tell me about his height,” Elaine said. Lindsay replied, “Oh, yeah. He is 6’2” and very lean and muscular.” Lindsay was a little jealous. She had lots of men in her life and lots of sexual experience. When they were living together, sharing a one-bedroom, this complicated things for Lindsay, as she often had to stay away from her apartment.
Elaine asked how the evening ended, and Lindsay told her about the sudden ending but also the incredible kiss that they shared. Elaine asked if they were going to go on another date, and Lindsay said, “I sure hope so!”
“I was kind of worried about you when we were living together. You never went on a single date,” said Elaine. Lindsay told her that this was her first date in NYC after living here for 7 years. Elaine said, “Wow, that is surprising. I remember how you dated in college quite frequently.”
“Well, I have been busy with work, and it seems like all of the young men just want one thing, sex,” responded Lindsay. Elaine said, “Thank God! It has been good for me!”
“I have no issues with pre-marital sex at all, but I do worry about finding the right man for marriage, and I do not think having sex helps with that decision. I do not want to have sexual prowess be the criterion for marriage for him or for me,” explained Lindsay.
“So,” Elaine kiddingly asked, “will you be a virgin until you are married? Are you still a virgin?” “Yes, believe it or not, I am still a virgin at age 29”, answered Lindsay. “But, no, I do not expect to be a virgin at my wedding. I think one should be very good friends first, even if you decide not to get married.”
“So, is Ervin marriage material? Could he be the one? I know you have been on only one date, but please tell me where he stands,” said Elaine.
“It’s really way too early for me to guess, but I won’t say no,” replied Lindsay. “I would like to get to know him better and for him to get to know me better too.”
“I know you don’t get along with your parents, and maybe you do not care if they like him or not, but would they,” asked Elaine?
“Well, no effing way,” responded Lindsay. “He is African-American.”
Elaine remembered instantly how racist Lindsay’s parents appeared to be, but she was very supportive. “I think that is very neat, Lindsay. Does that bother you at all?”
“Not really, Elaine. It perhaps excites me, because I know how much it would bother my parents. I need to be careful with that becoming my driver in this relationship. When we met and went on our first date, we did not talk about this at all, but I am sure that Ervin and I will need to address our racial differences.”
“Well, I need to warn you, Lindsay. Once you try black, you never go back.”
Lindsay responded that she had heard that before and asked Elaine, “Have you ever had sex with an African-American, or is that just something you heard too?”
“I have nothing against it at all, but I have never had interracial sex,” said Elaine. “The story is that their size is big. I have seen pictures before that confirmed this story, but I have no idea if this is generally true. With that said, I remember finding your vibrator when we were living together, and you appear to have no problem with the large size!”
“Yeah, that vibrator has been a good friend to me for many years now,” responded Lindsay. “Well, it is getting late, and I should go. I appreciate your chatting with me.”
“Thanks for filling me in, Lindsay. I am so happy for you and wish you the best.”
After she said goodbye to Elaine, she was very grateful that she was still her friend.
