This Adopted Person Supports Abortion Legality
I was adopted in 1965 and have been aware of this since I was a young child. I don't think being adopted had a big impact on my life, as I looked at it the way Steve Jobs did, as I wrote in my review of the excellent book about his life recently. With that said, I have known many others who were adopted and suffered greatly from feelings of abandonment. I sure like the idea of adoption, but it isn't always so smooth.
One of the best things in my life has been my reunion with my biological mother. This happened in 2019, when I was 54 years old. I discussed this in my book, Happier Than Ever. As I explained there, I have always been in favor of abortion being legal despite my incorrect view that my biological mother had given me up for adoption rather than aborting me.
I was against aborting me, but I was never against the idea of abortion. I was glad when I learned that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that abortion is federally legal in 1973 (Roe v. Wade). I had developed into a Libertarian early in high school in the early 80s. Now, I am still libertarian, but I don't support that political party.
Abortion has become a very big issue again in the U.S. recently. Many states have outlawed it (including mine, Texas), and it is a big part of the upcoming presidential election. I think that there are a lot of reasons to support Kamala Harris's bid and to reject Donald Trump's, but their views on abortion laws add to my position.
Abortion is not my big issue, as legalization of cannabis stands in front for me. There are a lot of other things that seem more important too. My views on abortion are not positive, but I don't think it should be illegal. In my view, a woman has the right to choose. I understand that many who believe that life begins at conception argue that these individuals have rights too. I have always believed that abortion should not be birth control, but regulating that is challenging.
So, I am not a fan of abortion, but I understand that sometimes it is the only solution. Most who are in favor of it being illegal seem to accept that there are certain exceptions, like a terminally ill or severely diseased fetus or a baby that is the result of rape or incest.
I think that America made a lot of progress with Roe v. Wade in 1973, and I am a bit horrified by how many people are rooting for abortion to be illegal again. I hope that America continues to allow women the choice to have a baby or not.
